Being quarantined in Perth when Aotearoa (New Zealand) went into lockdown meant I couldn't get home. My thoughts and prayers were for my whanau (family) back home...the virus was spreading and Ngāpuhi Māori (north Auckland tribal area where I'm from) were the first to put up road blocks to stop tourists and outsiders travelling up north. Māori weren't going to wait for history to repeat itself whereby previous generations fatally affected by epidemics such as the flu, were wiped out.
